Recently we were offered a free month of usage to Fotolia.com if we were willing to put up a review once finished. Well, it seems our one month finished up yesterday, and as promised here is a quick review of what we thought of the site and it’s content.
First up, the site works well, it’s fast, search results are relevant to what we searched for and the process to accumulate files was easy. The timing couldn’t have been better because we had just such a need with a new site we were launching and managed to find every file we needed and then some.
They also have a downloadable application that is built with Flex. We only had the time to play with and test v2.2 but since then they have a 2.3 out with hopefully some bug fixes that we had found. Primarily the scrolling was an issue for us as it was jarring to have the scrollbar suddenly move while scrolling down through the images presented. They load in dynamically to save bandwidth and memory but the process isn’t unobtrusive. Sometimes the images wouldn’t load in correctly or in the right place either, they were strange bugs. Other than those standout items the app worked great. Good job guys.
Overall the content was quite good. Lots of material to choose from. Given the option (and maybe we didn’t look hard enough) the ability for a more refined search would be good. That’s tough criticism though as it’s not the easiest to catalog these things and make sure that authors put in the right keywords etc.
Bottom line is that it’s a good site, good content and very friendly staff. We’ll probably just continue to use them for our needs until they don’t meet them.
