While I’ve been incredibly busy doing a pile of Wowza based applications and streaming video, lately virtual reality has really taken off and it only makes sense that the streaming world will also be moving in there. In turn, so are we.
In the past we did a few projects here on Augmented Reality. One of those that was put on iOS devices was the Coast Spas Virtual Spa app. I talked about that here. Unfortunately, or fortunately maybe.., Metaio (the AR SDK provider) got bought out by Apple and that was that. Everybody that put their time into that SDK was then left out in the cold to either use another or move on to other things.
For all intents and purposes, it’s likely the future now is Virtual Reality. While AR is cool, it’s place will end up being limited in comparison. I can see the concepts being well applied to Microsoft’s Hololens, but that thing has a ways to go to proper conception. Unlike VR, which is already out there and about to get a huge punch forward with new hardware coming out from 3 different manufacturers.
It will be very interesting to see future developments of VR, but the main ones that I have found interesting center around intensive gaming and world development and then environment replacement movie watching. Netflix is working very hard on that second on there and the technical challenges are incredibly interesting to follow. For gaming, this article is a good look into the latest games out there.
Anyways, look forward to more posts and tutorials on the subject as we make a shift from desktop and mobile apps and streaming over to VR!
