A while back I posted about an application I was working on that involved augmented reality. After more development and then the process of getting the application through the red tape of the business and then the Apple Store, it has been released and available to check out!
The application is an augmented reality based hot tub by Coast Spas here locally. The idea is that you can scan the logo of the company and right on top of that will appear one of the vanishing edge hot tubs that they sell.
The metaio SDK takes care of all kinds of things, image recognition is the first and even works fine when scanning on a screen.
We got in some interactivity in there with the ability to turn on some lights, fill the tub and turn the jets on. Being a mobile application, it is somewhat limited in going about that, but we found some decent compromise there I think. The ability to move the logo around and the product itself on top of that, is pretty cool. Allowing people to choose a shell colour for the tub and the exterior paneling is the final piece in the augmented reality part.
Once that is all figured out we then added the ability to put the spa on the screen of the tablet or phone and point your camera at your yard, deck or in your house to see how the hot tub would look and the view you would have. A neat piece that was thought on near the end of the project.
All in all, working with augmented reality is very cool. I’m very impressed with the object tracking it does, not only in 2D, but also 3D. Pinching, zooming, moving and rotating all seem pretty normal of course, but when you add in the tracking and animation, there is a lot of really neat things going on at once that I see a lot of opportunities for.
Anyways, check it out. It’s free! Of course the real tub is amazing.. the vanishing edge is a huge seller. Hopefully we can get more models in, the one with the TV is nice for sure.
